The importance of Web standards?
By Ketan in Articles, Design, Web Standards

A few months ago I wrote a tender for a Web project in which I banged on about building with the latest Web standards, ensuring clean code and making the site user-friendly and accessible.

Unfortunately, for reasons out of our hands, Dubbed did not win. But, I was notified of their new website launch and was horrified to find that …

… the entire site was built using tables, poorly designed, has html errors and … well it just looks like it was done four years ago!!

It’s amazing how most (but not all!) professional Web companies stride to keep up with the latest standards in order to provide the best service. Having a website doesn’t stop at design. Clients want to be listed as high as possible on the search engines - they want to be noticed, they want results, they want enquiries. This is a big factor in designing for the Web today and it’s something that Dubbed Creative always keep in mind on all Web projects.

By using the latest W3C guidelines, code can be streamed down by almost 90%, improving search engine ranking because the Web pages can be scanned better. But, not only this - code and content is clearly differentiated and can be easily formatted for different mediums e.g. print, screen, handheld devices, etc.

Unfortunately, the majority of potential clients won’t be aware of any of the latest Web standards and to them it’s probably just technical jargon! But, it’s something that we as Web designers are passionate about and it’s only right that we implement these standards to the benefit of our clients.

As a fellow web designer/developer I could not agree more. I’ve almost developed an OCD for clean code and often look at the source to see how well the (X)HTML is formatted. You’re right; proper code brings so many advantages to the website but the client - unless they are technical - will never appreciate them…
